I really am a live and let live kind of guy even while believing the next guy is a knucklehead most of the time. Ok, I am a bit of a misanthrope. But where did the the Confederate flag become this huge symbol of freedom and cultural heritage? Really, its about enslavement, death, and oppression.

Its like driving your big fat Ford or Chevy truck down the street with a Nazi flag flying proudly in the breeze while booming Gotterdamerung from your speakers. Even if you vote Romney, like have your future stripped away from you and your children etc, can we agree flying the flag of the supporters of 19th Century genocide is not where we want to be? If for no other reason than good taste and common sense?

Those who fought for the Confederacy may have had a sense of honor to their state in an era when the was not the type of national identity we have now. But they were traitors to the oaths they swore if they graduated from West Point or were members of the US Armed Forces or members of Congress. They fought not for honor, but for slavery which their economy was based. The declarations of every single Southern State Legislature say that they were seceding over the issue of slavery.

If you want to have pride in your heritage find it somewhere else. In your music, literature, sports, achievements in the arts and sciences. But maybe its time to demonstrate you have left the 19th century and that flag behind. Unless you still want to announce and define yourselves as the heirs of a bunch of racists whose legacy you still support.
