I was tired of seeing these but without a Romani one…
so I made one…
These pictures all cool and all but sometimes they make me mad. Its a costume, I get it its not cool to make a costume out of something that someone is but there are witch costumes, there are priests, native american costumes, egyptian, greek, roman and arabian costumes and many MANY more. I could understand if one group of people had been singled out but thats not the case.
I’m sure celebrities like Snooki, Lady Gaga, and all those really popular costumes at the moment LOVE having people dress like them just so they can act like TOTAL dumbasses.
*facepalm*
I made this in response to a series of other photos with Japanese (Geisha), Native American (Pocahottie) and others…
Witches and priests are NOT cultures - they are something one chooses to be. I actually had a (now ex) pagan friend tell me that she was going as a Gypsy for Halloween, and if I was offended I should go as a witch, because then we’d be even. The thing is, she CHOSE to be a pagan. I did not CHOOSE to be born Romani.
Celebrities ALSO choose their life paths. They are not unwilling in their life choices… so they know that people are assholes and will dress like them, parody them, whatever, and they are free to walk the fuck away whenever they like.
But, the difference is, it’s not a whole race or ethnicity of people. People who canNOT just turn and walk away from their ethnicity.
Romani are still persecuted across the world on a daily basis. Only today, a Romani camp in France was burned to the ground by antiziganists.
The Esmeralda stereotype is disgusting and offensive to us. We don’t dress like that, we don’t act like that, and we’re not some costume that can be compared to life choices.
@mrsgarygnu: PLEASE visit http://nativeamericantaghallofshame.tumblr.com for resources as to why this is oppressive and messed up and not on par with a celebrity disliking people dressing like them.
*facepalm*
